The Shell Point Genealogical Society (SPGS) is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping members research and document their personal family history.

Meetings and programs are held monthly on the 2nd Friday of the month to discuss topics of interest. For this year’s meeting dates and locations, click on the Schedule of Shell Point Genealogy Meetings. For prior year meeting topics since 2021, along with program slides and handouts, click on the list of Shell Point Genealogy Meetings since 2021. Programs in 2020 were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Genealogy Library at the Woodlands Commons offers a collection of reference materials to help in your research. Free access to several paid genealogy research websites is also available on the library computer. Volunteers are available to assist you during Library Hours. Library hours are subject to change depending on volunteer availability, so click here for the SPGS Library Operational Hours. What’s in a name…enter your family names here to see the origin of the names and how common they are in the US and worldwide. Here are some of the names researched by our members.

Training course and fill-in forms…provide some helpful tips from the Family History Basics Course along with blank genealogy charts you can use to record and organize your research.

FamilySearch.org…is a good place to start searching. This site provides free access to millions of records accumulated by the Latter Day Saints (LDS-Mormon) Church and housed in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sign up for a free account - no credit card required. Here are some searching tips.

Sharing via GEDCOM…a standard file format for sharing your research information with family members and other researchers.

Schedule of genealogy meetings and seminars in the Ft Myers area.

Lee County Library offers in-person seminars, on-line access to subscription genealogy websites, and a large reference library in downtown Ft. Myers. Select ‘Genealogy’ for a list of e-sources, and view the calendar with Program Type=‘Genealogy and History’ for in-person and online seminars.

Lee County Genealogical Society meets monthly with speakers on various genealogy topics of interest.

A list of genealogy websites was compiled by the former SPGS Webmaster, Don Schofield. Some links are out of date, but many still provide useful genealogy information by topic and by location.

Cyndi’s List includes 79 categories of Genealogy Websites that are regularly checked and updated.

SPGS Member Albert Myer’s website includes family information on more then 80,000 individuals.
